During the last 19 years, the department has made its identity in the frontier areas of Life Sciences and now it has developed into a full-fledged center of teaching and research in modern biology. Department has received funds from the UG program.

The research activities are diverse and have been organized into 3 major thrust areas: Environmental Biology including Eco-toxicology, Microbial ecology, Environmental biotechnology, and Wildlife conservation. Over the years a lot many significant findings have been made by specialists from these divisions. The primary aim of this program is to develop practical skills in handling scientific equipment and instruments. The program will also equip learners with key job skills cum scientific temperaments required for positions involved in Scientific Laboratories, Industries based on high profile Energy Resources, and Research & Development Sectors.

Courses Offered: 3 years B. Sc Program in Zoology, Botany, and Chemistry and 2-year M.Sc. Program in Zoology (Specialization in Environmental Science). An M.Sc. Zoology is a 2-year postgraduate academic degree program that focuses on studies relating to animals. It mainly includes the study of the structure, evolution, embryology, taxonomy, behavior, and distribution of living and extinct animals. The candidates who have done with their B.Sc. program can choose this master’s course which opens up a wide scope of securing a rewarding career.

Unique features of the department: In the division of Environmental Biology investigations were carried out on the testing capability of the soil, water (Physiological and Biochemical) estimation, microbiological research including TBC, CFU, and cultivation. In Environmental Physiology, the research deals mainly with response physiology and eco-toxicology of a wide variety of organisms inhabiting marine, freshwater, and semi-terrestrial environments.  The effects of heavy metal toxicants on respiratory physiology are being worked out. The Department has shown progress in different fields of research.  It has been working hard for the diversification of activities by introducing applied aspects and establishing linkages with international institutions, in research programs designed for the future.
